Foreign Portfolio Investors To Pay Higher Tax On Debt Securities: Report

Foreign portfolio investors will lose a preferential tax rate on interest from Indian government securities and corporate and foreign currency bonds, a senior tax official said on Saturday. Foreign portfolio investors have been enjoying a lower 5% tax on interest earned on bonds since 2013, making investments in the country more attractive. Ending this treatment would require them to pay a 20% tax on interest income from July 1. "It has not been extended," Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman Nitin Gupta told Reuters. "Our view point is that it was a revenue foregone by the government "We have certain tax treaty with any jurisdiction which permits the Indian government to deduct tax at a certain rate. We had foregone that right. It was helping the other government, and the other jurisdictions," Gupta said in an interview. The exemption does not benefit any Indian company, he said. Gupta said regular registration by charitable trusts will help India in ga...

"On The Brink Of Collapse": Pakistan Oil Industry's SOS Ahead Of IMF Meet

Oil companies in cash-strapped Pakistan have warned that the industry is on the "brink of collapse" as the dollar liquidity crisis persists and their cost of doing business balloons due to the rupee's devaluation. The government removed the dollar cap to meet the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) demand which resulted in the Pakistani rupee falling to a historic low of Rs 276.58 in the interbank market, according to a Geo News report. The IMF has set several conditions for resuming the bailout, including a market-determined exchange rate for the local currency and an easing of fuel subsidies, both conditions which the government has already implemented. In a letter to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and Energy Ministry, the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) said that the "sudden depreciation" of the rupee has caused losses worth billions of rupees to the industry as their letters of credit (LCs) are expected to be settled on the new rate...

"Irresponsible Act": Blinken Slams China After Spy Balloon Found Over US

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday told a top Chinese official that it was "irresponsible" of Beijing to send a surveillance balloon over US soil as he explained why he postponed a visit. In a phone call with Wang Yi, Blinken noted China's "statement of regret but conveyed that this is an irresponsible act and a clear violation of US sovereignty and international law that undermined the purpose of the trip," a State Department statement said. "For Me It's About Dharma": Rishi Sunak On Taking Up Challenging Tasks

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has spoken of his motivation behind taking on the top job at 10 Downing Street in the wake of intense political turmoil last year as his "dharma". In a televised interview with 'Talk TV' host Piers Morgan at his Downing Street home to mark 100 days in the job as Britain's first Indian-origin Prime Minister on Thursday, he was asked what made him take on the tough task amid a crippling cost-of-living crisis and his predecessor Liz Truss' shortest term as Prime Minister at just 45 days. "For me it's about duty. There's a concept in Hinduism called dharma, which roughly translates into duty and that's how I was raised. It was about doing the things that were expected of you and trying to do the right thing," he replied. "Even though it was going to be a nightmare job… I felt that I could make a difference and was the best person to make a difference at that moment, especially given the challenges th...

Tax Sought From Amazon In India On Cloud Services Fees Paid To US

Indian tax authority has decided to charge tax on cloud services fees paid by Amazon to the US, a move which will lead to company coughing up "significant" amount in taxes including payments for some of the previous years, the company said in a regulatory filing. Without sharing details of the decision, Amazon said it will contest the decision but it will have to remit a significant amount in taxes unless the matter is resolved. "In February 2023, we received a decision by the Indian Tax Authority (ITA) that tax applies to cloud services fees paid to the US. We will need to remit taxes on the services in question, including for a portion of prior years, until this matter is resolved, which payments could be significant in the aggregate," the company said. Amazon claimed that the ITA's decision is without merit. "We believe the ITA's decision is without merit, we intend to defend our position vigorously, and we expect to recoup taxes paid. If this ma...

Watch: Ronaldo Finally Scores 1st Goal For Al-Nassr in Saudi Pro League

Cristiano Ronaldo finally opened his account for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League but was unable to guide his team to victory against Al Fateh on Friday.  Al-Nassr received a penalty in the second injury time and Ronaldo made no mistake from the spot to make the score 2-2. It was a frustrating game for the Portuguese superstar who missed two chances to score and was dispossessed several times in the first 30 minutes. However, he kept his calm when the situation demanded and he even celebrated his first goal for the Saudi club with a trademark pose in front of the Al-Nassr fans. Man, 20, Beaten To Death For Allegedly Chatting With Girl In Bengaluru

A 20-year-old youth was brutally murdered for allegedly chatting with a girl in Bengaluru, the police said on Thursday. Four persons have been arrested in connection to the youth's murder, they said. According to officials, the victim has been identified as Govindaraju. "The accused have been identified as Anil, Lohit, Bharat, and Kishore. They have been arrested for the murder of a 20-year-old for allegedly chatting with a girl," DCP North Division Devaraj told the media. Officials said that the accused, Anil called Govindaraju out of the house on Sunday morning and took him to Andralli on a bike. "Later, other three accused joined him and attacked the victim with wooden sticks following which he died on the spot," they said. Following the incident, the accused switched off their mobile phones. "They had kept the body in Lohit's car, and later dumped it in the Charmudighat area and disappeared," the DCP said. Russia's Putin Warns West Over Arms Deliveries To Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday vowed a decisive response to any country threatening Russia and lashed out against Germany for promising tanks for Kyiv. His threats came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that the Kremlin was consolidating its forces for a fresh offensive. Zelensky was speaking in Kyiv beside EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, who said the bloc was looking to finalise fresh sanctions against Russia by February 24, exactly one year after Putin ordered troops into Ukraine. In the southern Russian city of Volgograd, Putin said: "It's unbelievable but true. We are again being threatened by German Leopard tanks." He was speaking at a ceremony commemorating the Red Army's victory against Nazi troops 80 years ago in Stalingrad, as the city was then known. "We have something to respond with," he added. "A modern war with Russia will be completely different." Ukraine this month secured promises from the West for deli...

Zelensky Says Ukraine Should Start EU Entry Talks "This Year"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday his war-torn country deserved to start EU accession talks "this year". "I believe that Ukraine deserves to start negotiations on EU membership this year," Zelensky said Thursday after talks with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen. He said further integration with the European bloc would inspire Ukrainians and give them "motivation" to fight against Russian troops. On Friday, Kyiv hosts a high-profile EU-Ukraine summit. In June last year EU leaders granted candidate status to Ukraine, just months after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops to the pro-Western country. But the path to full membership remains long despite Kyiv's bullishness, and could take years. French President Emmanuel Macron warned last May it could take "decades" before Ukraine meets the criteria and achieves full membership. Zelensky said that Ukrainian and EU officials had a "mutual" understanding. ...

US Congresswoman Removed From Foreign Affairs Panel Over Israel Remarks

The US House of Representatives voted Thursday to oust a controversial Democrat from a powerful committee over anti-Semitic comments, in a move seen by her party chiefs as revenge for their previous removal of far-right Republicans. Former Somali refugee Ilhan Omar, the third Democrat to be stripped of committee assignments by Republicans this year, has made several comments critical of Israel since 2012 that were condemned on all sides. "I am a Muslim, I'm an immigrant and, interestingly, I'm from Africa," the 40-year-old Minnesota progressive said in a defiant floor speech ahead of her removal from the Foreign Affairs Committee. "Is anyone surprised that I'm being targeted? Is anyone surprised that I am somehow deemed unworthy to speak about American foreign policy?" The roughly party-line vote came after Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in Congress, kept a campaign promise to deny seats on the prestigious the Intelligence Committee to Ad...

US Councilwoman Shot Dead In Car Outside Her Home

A New Jersey councilwoman from Sayreville was reportedly shot and killed in her car on Wednesday night. The victim, Eunice Dwumfour, 30, was found dead inside her white Nissan SUV with multiple gunshot wounds, ABC reported. The car was found crashed near the Camelot at the La Mer apartment complex in Sayreville, NJ. The police said that they believe she was the intended target of the shooting, but do not have a clear motive. Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick described Ms Dwumfour as a "dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serving all of our residents," Fox News reported. A 911 call reported the shots fired at around 7.22 pm, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said. "This is an active and ongoing investigation anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Rebecca Morales of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Of...

Ex UK PM Boris Johnson's Brother Resigns As Director Of Adani-Linked Firm

Lord Jo Johnson, younger brother of former British prime minister Boris Johnson, has resigned his non-executive directorship of a UK-based investment firm linked with the now-withdrawn Adani Enterprises Follow-on Public Offer (FPO). 'The Financial Times' newspaper referenced UK Companies House records to reveal that 51-year-old Lord Johnson had been appointed as a director of London-based Elara Capital Plc in June last year and resigned on Wednesday, the day when the Adani Group announced the withdrawal of the FPO. Elara, which described itself as a capital markets business raising funds for Indian corporates, was among the bookrunners on the FPO. Mr Johnson insisted he has been assured of the company's "good standing" and has stepped down due to his own lack of "domain expertise". "I joined the board of Elara Capital, an India-focused investment firm based in London, as an independent non-executive director last June in the hope of making a cont...

German Woman Kills "Instagram Lookalike" To Fake Own Death

A 23-year-old German woman has been accused of seeking out a lookalike of herself on social media and killing her in an attempt to fake her own death, reported Telegraph . The brutal and bizarre case has been dubbed "the doppelganger murder." The police referred to the German woman as Shahraban K, 24, residing in Munich, who had set up a fake Instagram account and tried contacting women who resembled her. After scouting many profiles, she found a cosmetics blogger, Algerian citizen Khadidja O, 23, who lived about 100 miles away, police said. Both the women had long dark hair and similar complexion. According to police, Shahraban K and her boyfriend named Sheqir K, 24, reached out to Khadidja and offered beauty products and went to pick her up. US Justice Department Investigating Tesla Self-Driving Features

The US Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Tesla's driver-assistance features, the company said Tuesday in a financial document. The filing comes amid an ongoing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) review of the electric carmaker's "Autopilot" system. "The company has received requests from the DOJ for documents related to Tesla's Autopilot and FSD (full self-driving) features," the Securities and Exchange Commission filing said Tuesday. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has regularly promised that a fully autonomous vehicle is just around the corner, but his cars still only feature "driving assistance" -- which helps drivers change lanes or identify stop signs -- and not full autonomy that would allow drivers to look away from the road. The company did not say what exactly the requests were, but according to media reports, the department is looking into whether Tesla's claims about the reliability of its driver ...

Apple Workplace Rules Violate US Labour Law, Agency Finds

Apple Inc maintains workplace policies that unlawfully discourage employees from discussing working conditions, a U.S. labor agency has found. The National Labor Relations Board will issue a complaint targeting the policies and claiming Apple executives made comments that stymied worker organizing unless the company settles first, an agency official said on Monday in an email reviewed by Reuters. The official had sent the email to Ashley Gjovik, a former Apple senior engineering manager who filed complaints against the company in 2021. The NLRB investigates charges filed by workers and unions and decides whether to issue formal complaints against companies. The agency can seek to strike down workplace policies and require employers to notify workers of legal violations. Apple did not respond to a request for comment. The company has said it takes worker complaints seriously and thoroughly investigates them. An NLRB spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. ...
